Top Announcements of AWS re:Invent 2022

AWS VP and Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr, plus a select group of AWS Developer Advocate colleagues, started announcing the most impactful and exciting product and service launches to debut at AWS re:Invent 2022.

The automat-IT team will be discovering and testing some of them a bit later, for example:

- ENA Express: Improved Network Latency and Per-Flow Performance on EC2. ENA Express reduces P99 latency of traffic flows by up to 50% and P99.9 latency by up to 85% (in comparison to TCP), while also increasing the maximum single-flow bandwidth from 5 Gbps to 25 Gbps.

- Amazon ECS Service Connect Enabling Easy Communication Between Microservices. A new capability that simplifies building and operating resilient distributed applications. ECS Service Connect provides an easy network setup and seamless service communication deployed across multiple ECS clusters and virtual private clouds (VPCs). You can add a layer of resilience to your ECS service communication and get traffic insights with no changes to your application code.

- AWS Marketplace for Containers Now Supports Direct Deployment to Amazon EKS Clusters. This new launch makes it easier for you to find third-party Kubernetes operation software from the Amazon EKS console and deploy it to your EKS clusters using the same commands used to deploy EKS add-ons. Here is a list of AWS Marketplace software sellers that support Amazon EKS add-ons today.

- Fully Managed Blue/Green Deployments in Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS. With just a few steps, you can use Blue/Green Deployments to create a separate, synchronized, fully managed staging environment that mirrors the production environment. In as fast as a minute, you can promote the staging environment to be the new production environment with no data loss. During switchover, Blue/Green Deployments blocks writes on blue and green environments so that the green catches up with the blue, ensuring no data loss.

- AWS Config Rules Now Support Proactive Compliance. When creating standard resource templates, teams can run AWS Config rules in the proactive mode so that they can be tested to be compliant before being shared across your organization. When implementing a new service or new functionality, development teams can run rules in proactive mode as part of their CI/CD pipeline to identify non-compliant resources.

- Protect Sensitive Data with Amazon CloudWatch Logs. While developers try to prevent logging sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, credit card details, email addresses, and passwords, sometimes it gets logged. Until today, customers relied on a manual investigation or third-party solutions to detect and mitigate sensitive information from being logged. If sensitive data is not redacted during ingestion, it will be visible in plain text in the logs and in any downstream system that consumed those logs. Now you can enable Amazon CloudWatch Logs data protection to detect and mask sensitive log data as it is ingested into CloudWatch Logs or as it is in transit.

- Amazon CloudWatch Internet Monitor Preview – End-to-End Visibility into Internet Performance for your Applications. A new capability of CloudWatch that gives visibility into how an internet issue might impact the performance and availability of your applications. It allows you to reduce the time it takes to diagnose internet issues from days to minutes.

- A Fully Managed Schema Conversion in AWS Database Migration Service. Until now you had to download and install AWS SCT for your platform, including Windows or Linux (Fedora and Ubuntu). Now you can access features of DMS Schema Conversion in the AWS Management Console without downloading and executing AWS SCT.

- Amazon Inspector Now Scans AWS Lambda Functions for Vulnerabilities. The log4j vulnerability a few months ago was a great example that scanning your functions for vulnerabilities only before deployment is not enough. Because new vulnerabilities can appear at any time, it is very important for the security of your applications that the workloads are continuously monitored and rescanned in near real-time as new vulnerabilities are published.
